Sun Sui Wah

Having dim sum on a Sunday morning has always been a family tradition ever since I was little. However, it has never been the highlight of my weekends since the grown-ups at the table would spend hours sprawling over the newspaper and drinking tea leaving my sister and I bored to death. We got smarter soon enough and began bringing our own reading materials for entertainment. To this day, I still do not understand why my parents enjoyed reading their newspaper during dim sum, but I certainly understand the joy of the delicate cuisine.

There was no wait for a table when we arrived at Sun Sui Wah at 11:30 Sunday morning. Instead of the traditional push carts, we selected our food from an order sheet which allowed the dishes to be prepared fresh and steaming hot!

We didn’t order any adventurous dishes this time around, only the usual: Shrimp Dumplings, BBQ Pork Buns, Egg Tofu with Shrimps, BBQ Duck Meat Dumplings, Spareribs with Black Beans Sauce, Taro Paste Cakes and Homemade Tofu Paste.

Shrimp Dumplings
Made with fresh large shrimps wrapped in a clear thin rice skin!
BBQ Pork Buns
The bread was quite fluffy, but a little more BBQ pork would make it perfect!
Egg Tofu with Shrimps
The egg tofu was soft and silky!
BBQ Duck Meat Dumplings
Pass!
Spareribs with Black Beans Sauce
The meat was extremely juicy with just the right amount of fat!
Taro Paste Cakes
Too sweet and lacked the taste of taro!
Homemade Tofu Paste
The texture was a little odd, it felt like I was eating mashed up beans instead of soft silky tofu!
Total Cost for the Meal:
$36 CAD for two (tax and tips included)
Final Verdict:
Overall, the quality of food is pretty good when you are deprived of good Chinese food here in Seattle. However, when compared against the other restaurants around Vancouver, it really wasn’t anything too special.
